October 20 is World Osteoporosis Day, and this year the theme is Love your Bones, Protect Your Future. The focus is on risk factors that can lead to poor bone health, particularly other diseases like coeliac disease and diabetes, and the effects of other medications like corticosteroids.
CEO of Osteoporosis Australia, Greg Lyubomirsky said, “The theme, Love Your Bones, Protect Your Future, is extremely relevant during a time when osteoporosis does not have the profile it needs in Australia. We know that there are many patients going undiagnosed following fractures. These patients may be unaware that they are at risk of future fractures and osteoporosis. A greater understanding of risk factors can begin conversations with GP’s and specialists and this could reduce the number of fractures dramatically.
Help us spread the word: posters and fact sheets can be printed to display in your local area to help raise awareness – you can find them here: www.osteoporosis.org.au/WOD2016 There will be further resources and announcements leading up to and on the day, so keep an eye on the Osteoporosis Australia website and Facebook page.
